Combining multiple older consumer units into one modern installation

Consumer Unit Upgrade at a Special Needs Care Home in Amington, Tamworth

We recently upgraded a care home in Amington, Tamworth where the electrical system had been extended many times.

Several consumer units were spread around a hall cupboard, some high up and others near the meter and main fuse, making the installation awkward and hard to manage.

Some circuits lacked RCD protection and cabling was poorly supported and protected.

Before this type of work, an EICR is recommended to identify faults before reconnecting circuits to a new board.

The work we carried out

We removed the old units and consolidated the circuits into a single location.

Cables were extended where needed and new containment installed for proper support and protection.

The new consumer unit includes:

  • Main switch
  • Surge protection device
  • RCBO protection on each circuit
  • Spare ways for future use

RCBOs ensure each circuit is individually protected, reducing the risk of multiple circuits being affected by a single fault.

Spare capacity was also left for future additions.

A neater, safer installation

The result is a single, accessible consumer unit with properly contained cabling.

This project shows why upgrades often require more than simply replacing a fuseboard.

We carry out consumer unit upgrades across Tamworth and surrounding areas.
